Thought I'd better have a look at the rear shock linkage on my 71F before heading off to France at the end of next week. Just as well I did - it was seized!
I've got a spare linkage in the garage and the two smaller needle roller bearings in it are in better condition than the ones on the bike so I'm going to refurbish that one instead.
However it's not great. The steel hub in the middle, while in better nick than the one on the bike, is not in wonderful condition.
It is better than the original one though!
The main needle roller bearing in the original linkage was complete but rusted solid for about half it's diameter and the same bearing in the spare is even worse - half of it is missing!
I've just been on the phone to a couple of places for replacement bearings, Bearing Man in Newtown, Powys (01686 622522) and www.bikebearings.co.uk in Hampshire (01252 345455). The bearing in question is made by IKO but there is an alternative bearing with an HK suffix to the part number as opposed to IKO's TLA code. The chap at Bikebearings advised me to make sure that if I got a bearing with the HK suffix to check that it was a branded item from a reputable company as there are a few cheaper unbranded and poor quality bearings out there. That proved to be a useful piece of info as Bearing Man came up with one of these cheaper HK bearings to start with. I checked with them and they are getting me the better quality one now. They are all pretty cheap anyway, the good one is just £6.80p as opposed to the £4.60 for the cheapie. |
