Guys and Gals,
I've just been checking through my service history on my bike and just noticed to my horror that the last service on my bike was done on 26/7/06!!!! it was done at 2,760 and the clock is now showing 5,560
A couple of things - I know that it definately needs a service, but what will they do to it at that mileage and what cost.
Becuase ive just realised that my bike hasnt had a service for over 2 years im shit scared to ride it becuase that oil has been sat in my motor over 2 years and i dunt want it to go bang.
I've made a few calls and i've had quotes ranging from £125 to £200.
They said they change oil, filter, take wheels off and strip calipers, and check plugs, possibly replace them if neccessary.
Any advice, tips greatly recieved.
Regards
Chris |

Wouldn't worry too much about riding it for a few more days mate as long as it feels ok.
You can do an oil and filter change yourself unless you want the FSH, I did it a couple of weeks back and believe me if I can then a blind one armed 100 year old monkey could manage it
As for the calipers, dep again how mechanically minded you are, theres a brilliant step by step in the Tech Q & A section from Leon (one of our Tech Bods) and I am going to have a go at that this winter.
As for the price, doesn't seem that bad to me but I am sure there are plenty on here with a far better knowledge than me on exactly what needs doing and what the costs should be. |

Mate, you definitely need a service!
The milage isn't too important - only 3K since the last service - but if you are worried about the oil, drain it off and replace it before you take it to a garage. Ask the garage to do a flush if they don't as standard, same for the water system. The crank/gearbox oil should be OK, but if in doubt, get it flushed as well.
If you're bike has sat around for that long, it may be a good idea to get the brakes stripped & checked, especially the calipers, seals, hoses etc.
Plug change is pretty standard.
Get them to check suspension seals as well, maybe change piston fluids.
How come you've only done 3K in 2 years? |

i only bought the bike in june of this year, the guy i bought it off of was going through a divorce at the time, so never rode it, then sold it to me to pay for his divorce solicitor.
I think ive done around 1,200 miles since june
My forks were set up by KAIS in september and told they were ok.
I honestly didnt realise that it was that long since its last service becuase i wouldnt have ridden it. One of the garages ive spoken to told me that they would flush the motor out b4 the oil change.
Could have done without the expense just b4 xmas, however its my pride and joy so ill bit the bullet and get it serviced nxt month. |

Wouldn't worry to much bout the oil for a few more days, any crap thats in there is in there now and will come out with a flush. Modern oils don't decompose with age they only get contaminated with use, the milage youve done is not a deal over the service interval.
Don't get concerned about the gearbox/crankcase oil either, there is no seperate oils in your engine, the engine oil does all jobs.. lubes gears, keeps the clutch wet, and lubes the engine. Which is why a decent bike oil is a must as it has plenty of jobs to do! Car oil is a no no!! |

Yup don't get cheap oil as you could get clutch wear/slip
TBH don't use cheap oil on a car ether.
As to a flush im really against them as it clears out all the much keeping the engine quite in areas that have worn a bit. I have seen cars new and old never run right after a flush.... if you must flush only flush with fresh oil. The point to changing it regularly is to remove the contamination that is acting as sand paper. lodged in grim is not going to cause any further wear.
all other areas are more precaution or good maintanace (Brakes etc ) and if it feels fine its probably fine and will not matter leaving it a day or 2 |
