 |
|
Over the past months I’ve seen loads of posts about power commanders and custom maps etc so whilst I had 5 mins I thought I’d post a little explanation.
This is by no means an exhaustive explanation but I just thought it might give some of the non tech guys a little bit of info into what a power commander does.
Basically the idea of a power commander is to allow you (or a tuner) to optimise your bikes fuelling through the rev range.
Standard bikes have the fuelling set up to comply with emission laws not necessarily produce maximum power. Also by adding race cans etc this can upset the stock fuelling of a bike.
There is an optimum air fuel ratio for the performance of motorcycle engines and this is around 13% (though this is one of those figures that is always being argued about by tech people)
A higher percentage air fuel ratio is termed lean and conversely lower is termed rich.
[link]
The graph here shows two dyno runs;
Run 1 (blue)is a GSXR 1000 with race can and power commander tested as received with downloadable map installed.
Top plot shows horsepower v/s rpm for a 4th gear roll on test i.e. in 4th gear at about 4000 rpm apply full throttle till the red line (or almost)
Looking at the top plot you can see the horsepower is about 146 at peak power but looking at the lower graph you can see that from about 8,000 rpm the bike starts to run rich (air fuel below 13%)
Whilst this fuelling would not cause any issues with running the bike it could be made better.
Run 2 (red)is the same bike with a basic custom map installed, everything else remains the same i.e. 4th gear roll on test.
This time peak power has been increased everywhere from 8,000rpm and it can be seen that the fuelling is now a lot nearer ideal ( 13%) for the duration of the run.
Max power is now 151 though this test was more about fuelling than horsepower; the gain in power was a bonus.
There is much more to it than the above but as I said hopefully this gives some of you non technical guys a little bit more knowledge and understanding.
You at the back can wake up now he's gone. |

Anyone have a power commander for SRAD 600?
Ive looked on the well known auction site, But only have one for SRAD 750...Im assuming that would not work for a 600...
Also, I cant quite justify buying one new as they seem to be far to expensive |

Hi all im sure there is somewhere more appropriate for my first post but i joined this forum looking for info on power commanders so ill start here and look for the introductions section in a second!
Ive got a GSXR 750 'Y' Model (X reg 2000) and im looking to fit a power commander, the 'search' matrix on the PC website says that for my bike i need a Power Commander III Usb, off i toddled then to a well known auction site to find said Powercommander however they all seem to be listed bike specific.
Can anyone tell me if i can A) just buy any PCIII USB and fit it to my bike, B)See A but buy a bike specific Loom or C) none of the above?
Ive seen several that have been removed from GSXR 1000's can i just buy one of these?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can shed on this and keep up the great work on the site

I am not a Guru but I am sure that PC's are generic and it is the map that is specific. I have transfered my PC from my previous SP1 and fitted it to my SP2 and installed a map to suit. You would need a computer if you do not buy a specific one for your model. Cam anyone confirm or shoot down the above?

You are correct in that the PC's are basicaly generic but the harness's are bike specific and its this that stops you swapping them between most bikes. |
