Just a little story about Counter Steering. this happened back in May, Mate of mine Blade owner saw the K6 for the first time asked why I bought the 750 rather than the thou. Because I liked it is just not a good enough reason for blade owners, So I said I got the 750 because I really couldn’t handle a thou, with this he said have a go on mine, (billy big bollocks) you will have too be focussed round the bends.
I went out with another guy leading as he lived local, out of the residential area everything fine, stopped traffic lights, away we went wound the blade up a bit no probs nice comfortable bike, first bend right hander bike fought me all the way round it, next bend left hander bike having none of it tried to go straight on, I thought I must get off this thing, I’m not focussed enough. T Junction the guy leading was stopped, must get to him and get this bike back, just drew level and he was off down a lovely piece of twisty road, I had no idea were we were so I just had to follow I was using all my strength pushing on the bars counter steering and very conscious of doing so getting the bike round the bends, in fact it was the mother of all counter steering rides, if I had pushed the bars that hard on the gixer I would have been on my arse. Finally got the dog of a bike back to it’s owner much to my relief. I really thought the frame was bent the ride was so bad, The upshot of this is he got the bike suspension tuned and set up correctly the previous owner had a little fiddle with the settings and really sodded the bike up, a set of new tyres and hey presto a blade that handled like a blade which was a joy to ride on the isle of man the next time I had a go, All I can say is my mate is a bloody good rider as he rode the bike like that for over a year. |

Counter steering is really the only way to wazz around on an old gixer like mine, you can ..ahmen... almost do anything, really just as quick through the corners etc as a mate on his new gixer thou,,,
Just opens up the whole 1100 world that much more...
did i counter steer when i balls it up, no i was not.... doh! |

This is always a topic that gets many a comment whenever it comes up. Different people do different things, some do them better than others we all know that to be true. Counter steering is as much of a part of riding a bike as the brakes are for stopping it. Once you have ubnderstood it, it will help your ability to turn the bike quicker and more accurately than before. Once in a turn your turning should be done and the balance of the bike with power takes you round, any input from the rider will have an affect on the bike and not always to the benefit of the rider on board, any adjustment to the steering will just upset the bike. How often have you heard you should be able to take both hands of the bars through a corner? That balance is all about the body position, speed, throttle position, tyre pressures, tyre temperature etc etc..... total science stuff.
Most of us can only dream of getting it right all of the time, the rest of us just keep trying, and on occasion succeed. The main point is we should all keep trying to improve if we still get pleasure from it. |
