Now a known fault on these can be booked into Suzuki dealer to be fixed under warranty, gets rid of horrible grab and noise when clutch gets hot

Sounds like the same problem they had with the Busa's and the K3 and 4 Thou's. Caused by rough finish on the inside of the clutch basket. When the plates get hot they expand slightly and snag. The fix is to file the inside of the basket down.

They had to do that with my K4 but it didn't cure it so was a new clutch and basket under warranty.

I've never had any problems with the clutch on my K4, in fact i'd go as far as to say it's probably about the best i've ever used on a bike. Maybe they just took that bit of extra time with mine, a Wednesday afternoon or something. Wink

Good to see you back on Ali, hows the srad coming along? Get your progress back in the projects section, i've just got myself a 750 which i'm trying to do so any tips or advise would be good. Thum_1

Mine first started doing it with about 4K on the clocks. When ridden particularly hard, it would some times slip, grab, slip grab as you let the clutch out, making a horrible noise as you did it. It was realy noticable when it chose to do it from stand still or manouvering slowly, feathering the clutch.

The Mechanics were aware of this potential fault and although it no where hear involves all the bikes, its not uncommon.

My K5 1000 does it intermittently. Landed up in the middle of a roundabout with loads of noise and no drive! Shocked Are they going to issue a recall?

I exchanged mail with Simon Hargreaves at Bike Magazine and he eventually got to the bottom of it. The problem is lack of lubrication on the clutch ramps as the clutch is only "semi wet". The solution is as follows:

You need to go to dealer – here's what he's got to do:

1) remove the clutch hub with a special Suzuki tool

2) remove the slipper mechanism (the clutch lifter mechanism that ramps up)

3) grease the ramps with molybdenum disulphate grease

4) grease the boss on the clutch lifter mechanism that slips into the clutch hub

5) Use lots of grease, especially on the boss (K5 clutches run dry – they're splash fed by the oil)

For reference, it's in Engine Section 3-93 of the Suzuki workshop manual –Note 2. For some reason, Suzuki don't use grease in this area on all K5s.

An important note: when you strip the clutch, you must note the order the plates come off in, because they have to go back in exactly the same order and position. There are alignment dots to help, but they get washed off.

He said it transformed the bike. Personally, I'd have expected Suzuki to issue a recall, or at least offer to sort it out for anyone who is having problems. As Woody points out, it doesn't affect all K5's. It will be interesting to see if any K6's are affected and, if not, it would appear that Suzuki are paying more attention to greasing the mechanisms...even if they won't admit there was a problem in the first place.

Hi Guys,

I'm a newbie on here. I've been reading the forum for a while but not posted. This one interested me though as I have a K5 with the wonderful graunching clutch! Took it to the dealer after about 300 miles and they said it was fine but I've sufferered in silence with it for 12 months now. Rolling Eyes

I've just spoken to Suzuki UK and they are saying they have a small number of reports of clutch problems but dealers have not been advised on a rectification!

OpsMan who did you hear this from as my dealer is denying all knowledge Confused

I've been approached by 3 owners of a K4 1000 like mine, the limited edition black version, and they ALL had to have their clutches replaced due to the fault above. Touch wood, mine has been fine, but then it's only done 2k miles and most of that was commuting in the first few months of its life.

Each of the dealers (the bikes came from different garages) all said the same thing, and each dealer replaced the clutch under warranty. They all said, in their own way, that clearly the batch of clutches used on the black K4's (the LE bikes were made on the same production run) were faulty. However, Suzuki UK denied this.

Noticed a strange noise a couple of times on my K6, but not very often and it doesn't seem to affect the bike in any way.

My K5 1000 had a grabby clutch from new. It was horrible, I could either pull away at tickover or slightly above or like I was at Santa Pod - there was no in between without it grabbing and often stalling. I was lazy and just let the swell of tickover torque do me for 18 months but finally on my 4000 mile service I booked it in for the fitment of a washer which completely cures the problem. It is a known problem for 1000 K5's from the very beginning of production but I've been led to believe that Suzuki fixed the problem in 05 as well. It was a commonly known problem to K5 owners at The Wheelie Event - a place where K5's were everywhere. This is how I found it out. Funnily enough my local Suzuki dealer denied any knowledge of such issues about 8 months ago when I enquired but by August had fixed 4 k5 clutches in the same way.

Hope this helps.

This is exactly what my K6 has done half a dozen times.
Interesting read, will question my dealer when I next visit.
