just been away to ride the long way accross europe for the motogp in the czech republic, so here is a story that has never been told-
now then i'll try to keep it simple, day 1, left for my hols, nice ride down to kent to jump on the train and get accross the water. so far, so good. got into calais and got lost. got out of calais, and got lost. can you see a pattern emerging?
day 2, down through france and skirt around geneva, a good day, the view of the town of martigny as we dropped down the mountain side at night, all light up from around 2000 feet above it will haunt me for a long time to come. day 3, fu***** amazing. what else can you call riding the furka pass, susten pass, grimsel pass, furka pass again and down to the falula pass all in the same day. thats the swiss alps done then. and still can't stop giggling like a demented kid when i think back to it.
day 4. we set off to get out of swiss and into italy for the stelvio pass. half an hour later my mate drops his bike when his front wheel got caught in wet train tracks. result, broken bike and broken elbow. after some discussion he persuades me to carry on as i can't do fug all for him, so i ride the stelvio on my own (well chasing a couple of loopy austrians anyway)
(p.s the stelvio pass is not fun. it is however the most scary and dangerous thing i have ever done!!!! )
then proceed to cross austria in torrencial rain for the rest of the day and the next morning and into the czech to brno(an experience in its self)
any way. got a ticket. another boring race, and left the next morning. now the others at brno (who all went the boring way) were planning to spend 2 nights in prauge then have a day and a half to do a the remaining 800 miles on motorway. how fuggin boring will that be, so me and one other set off home on monday morning a nice scenic route.all was well til frankfurt when we hit built up germany. got lost. got pissed off, got more lost and more pissed off then after a short, and stupid discussion decided to create the dumbball rally. yes, home in one go with no sleep. so that was about a thousand miles in 24 hrs to calias (got lost a couple of times) then tunnel back to uk and another 250 miles home.
so to summerize, on my HOLIDAY, i rode the 3 most famous mountain passes in the swiss alps in 1 go and survived and then rode 1000 miles in 24 hrs. (total miles over 3000 in a week) did i have a good holiday? 'kin A i did!!!!!!!!! now i must sleep. should wake up around november |

it was all so easy, only booked the tunnel crossing and that was it. no sat nav (that'll be why i got lost so much then) just a european map book and off we went. pick an interesting looking road and go for it. get digs around 9/10 in the evening (sometimes later, depending on what you can find) and just make it up as you go.
i really cannot recommend this enough to all of you that like the idea, it was also my first time out of the uk, so in with both feet i went and shall never forget it.
thanks also for the concern for my mate, he'll be ok. just got even more pins in him now. (burial or cremation? fug it, i'll wiegh him in when the time comes!!!) |
