Does anybody fit and balance their own tyres at home? What equipment do you use to change a tyre then balance?

cheers

Ideally you really need the right equipment bud. You can struggle but to be honest, if you take your wheels into a tyre fitting centre you should only reallybe charged around a tenner each anyway.

You can do it yourself with a bead breaker such as 'Abba' ( not the band)

and tyre levers though you will also need a compressor to get the tyre blown back up after changing and you could buy a balancer from the same place but i do know people who have made their own.

Though as said above you need to be swapping a lot of tyres to make it worthwhile.

Hi I do my own, but if you want to keep your wheels minted get them done on a proper machine buy someone who knows what they are doing , However if its for spare / trackday wheels you can get the bead breaker and a balancer you will need from flea bay you will need a valve to key and access to a compressor too

Have been doing all my own tyre changes for a few years now.
Got all the right equipment and with practice it's easy enough.
At £20 a pair it doesn't take long to save the outlay back if you do regular changes.
I am pretty anal about looking after my bike and other peoples so make sure i don't mark any rims.

I do my own to. I use the tyre machine in work (im a car tyre fitter) to do the rear but the front wont fit as it too narrow, so i use levers and rim protectors. Ive yet to mark my painted wheels. All you need to change a tyre is a bead breaker (i have used a bench vice in the past but its not ideal), some soap, at least 2 levers and a protector for each lever. A tyre valve key would be handy. As for inflating the tyre, you local petrol station will do. Then you will need to balance it. I think hein gericke do a balancer for about £30.

: I wasn`t suggesting that you cant do it with out damaging your rims guys, You can as long as your carefull. thats a good little kit there, a little expensive but you get what you pay for, deff the best type of bead breaker and in 8 changes you have it paid for

I have a bead breaker, wheel balancer, tyre levers, rim protectors, valve key, compressor, air line and inflator.
Total cost was about £160 4 or 5 years ago. Average about 14 or 15 tyre changes a year. . . . .

Do you not get any vibrations? The reason i ask is ive just put an unbalanced wheel on the rear of my bike and noticed vibrations straight away.

you have been extremely lucky to not get any vibrations. Balanced countless tyres and only ever had 2 that didnt need any weight to balance.
