I fancy this, should be able to blag the ZX onto it even tho' it's an 01'. Anyone fancy some old school action? SRAD's looked under-represented last time, what about you old school gixer owners??? (DRUMMINGOD i'm thinking specifically of you..........and GRAYO)
Mullets are NOT optional, they are required. |

Great day, but as usual with Cadders a long drive first, left at 5.15 got there at 7.30 (I know it's not long in the Dod scheme of things but its enough for me!)
Met up with a couple of 2-stroke riders i know thru' the PB Forum, both on race bikes, KR1S and an ultra rare KR1R. Good banter, great people. It was really nice to see some older metal, 6 mint RC45's (novice group, thoses that rode them), and ten KR1's, PB photographed em' all, will no doubt be in the mag next month.
Weather was spot on, warm, slightly overcast. First session was 3 sighting laps only, what a waste of time. Fast group was a geezer on a race prepped carb'd R1, proper quick, he just buggered off and lapped everyone. Few strokers, supercharged R1, TRX850 (also silly quick) and 2 of us on 750's, some old Blades, couple of SRAD 600's, VFR400's etc. First session red flagged after three laps when a VFR binned it at Barn, why do people push on cold tyres? Remainder of session confirmed that the ZX7 is proper quick and turns very fast with the PVM wheels on and could hold stupid corner speed for a big old bus. However, braking 200 odd kilo's for the hairpin and tighter corners from Shaws through to Barn really took effort and I feel like bloody Popeye now. Gearing was spot on from Barn all the way back to Mansfield, and pulled 135 on Park Straight in 5th before braking. I found after experimenting that due to the corner speed and stability the bike had that I could get away quite happily with 3rd where a 600 would have been in second. Loving the torque. Ohlins shock was a revelation as well, no tyre tear at all, very progressive, lots of feel.
Third session cut short due to huge crash at Hall Bends which shut the circuit for hour and a half, requiring air ambulance. Not sure of condition of the rider, but didn't look good at all.
Afternoon was more of the same, trying to keep Mark in sight on his KR which was impossible cos it just buggered off out of the slow corners like they didn't exist. Never saw the rest of the group all day, well only when i was going down the Gooseneck as they were coming up Park Straight
Conclusions??? I love Cadwell. The bike worked fantastic for what is essentially an irrelevant 12 year old design. It's too heavy. Still. But the only weight to shed now is mine ( ) and the bodywork, but that defeats the purpose of buying it to use on the road. Without the PVM wheels and on standard suspension it would have been a shocking barge to ride, and the engine tune gave it the torque to hang with the R1's down the back straight and drag them in on later on the brakes, but the physical effort to do all the short sharp direction changes was knackering and didn't suit the big old bus. It can carry some serious, stable lean though And i never knew about the science of correctly fuelling a stroker. Scary. Several buckets, measuring jugs, a wisk, AvGas, oil and fuel cans with BIG labels on (so you don't put diesel in it, I assume )
A great day, which I cut purposely short due to wanting to get home and see Harry before he went to bed. Had the pi$$ taken mercilessly by them 2 stroke boys as they weren't sweating at the end of each session like some sort of deviant. But I got my own back, as it took me 30 seconds to put petrol in mine, and I didn't need an Abacus and 6 fingers to work out ratio's and jetting Photos looked good, but i'll wait for them to be posted on t'web before i ponce them. Hopefully PB will do the day justice with a decent magazine spread! |
