Sykes fired up for Mallory Park
TOM SYKES and his Rizla Suzuki team are ready to take on the challenging Mallory Park circuit this weekend for round six of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship.
Following on from his podium success at Snetterton, where he secured a hard fought third place, Sykes is determined to go for more podium glory and that as yet elusive win. The intricate Mallory Park circuit is one that he knows particularly well and he believes he can run at the front.
Atsushi Watanabe has another new track to learn and will be in at the deep end from the start of free practice on Friday 27th June. He has already taken part in a track day at the Friendly Circuit near Leicester in the Midlands with former triple Champion John Reynolds, so he has some knowledge of the 1.41 mile track. He was surprised at how small the circuit was but is determined to get the better of the tight turns which frequent the Leicestershire venue.
The singular 50-miunute qualifying session takes place on Saturday 28th June at 1440–1530. Race one takes place on Sunday 29th June at 1315 with race two at 1620. British Eurosport will broadcast live between 1300-1430 and 1530-1715.
Jack Valentine, Rizla Suzuki Team Manager said: “Tom is fired up for a good result, he knows Mallory like the back of his hand and he will be giving it 100 per cent to try and take the race win. He is confident of a good ride, our Rizla Suzuki works well there, plus Mallory Park is the first place Tom ever tested for us so we have a good history with the place.
“As for Atsu, it will be a tough weekend for him as the track is narrow and there will be a lot of traffic to deal with. There are a lot of chicanes and heavy braking areas so it is going to be hard work for him. I’d like to see him get a good qualifying under his belt and aim for a top 10 when the racing starts in anger.
“I know it is the half way point in the season but that won’t have any impact on how we approach this weekend. We will tackle it in our usual Rizla Suzuki manner and give 100 per cent to achieve strong results from both riders.” |

Pole position and more to come from Sykes
TOM SYKES emphatically took his first pole position for Rizla Suzuki at the sixth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Mallory Park today and has vowed he can go even faster.
The Yorkshire ace had been in contention during every practice session and put on a domineering performance in qualification. He led from the start and even a mid-session switch to his spare bike didn’t upset his composure as he continued to go faster, securing pole position with only moments left on the clock.
Rizla Suzuki’s double Japanese Superbike Champion Atsushi Watanabe showed an impressive turn of pace on his first visit to the twisty and short 1.41-mile Leicestershire circuit, ending up 12th on the grid and less than three-quarters of a second away from his team mate in pole position.
Superbike racing starts at 1315 tomorrow, Sunday June 29th, at Mallory Park near Leicester. It will be shown live on Eurosport and then a highlights programme will feature on Channel 4 at 0120 on Tuesday July 1st.
Tom:
“I came round with two minutes to go in qualifying and my dash told me I recorded a 56.2s lap. I was so close to pole I decided to get my head down and go for it. I had to try hard but a pole is a pole and I am delighted.
“I could have gone even quicker, a 55-second lap was possible but my spare bike was backing in and we didn’t have time to dial in new settings so I wasn’t quite able to go as fast as I wanted. The good news is that we can go faster with my number one Rizla Suzuki and that’ll be ready for tomorrow, so bring on the racing. Thank you to my Rizla Suzuki team for all its support and help, my GSX-R1000 is fantastic.”
Atsu:
“Mallory Park is very short, twisty and physical track. I strange but like it. I am disappointed with 12th place but I feel maybe this is not so bad given my first visit here.
“We still make small changes to my Rizla Suzuki for better feel and performance and maybe just little bit more will mean I can compete well in the races. It will not be easy but I forward look to top 10 results!”
Jack Valentine, Rizla Suzuki Team Manager:
“That was simply awesome; there is no other way to describe it. Tom was mega on his spare bike and took pole position emphatically. He would have been even further ahead of the field if his number one bike had been available but an intermittent fault meant it wasn’t available – although it will be tomorrow when Rizla Suzuki and Tom Sykes will be competing for a long over-due victory.
“Atsu has impressed this weekend. He has brought a more aggressive and determined approach to his riding and at a circuit that was always going to be difficult to learn he is ahead of a lot of good riders with much more circuit experience. He is starting to show his teeth and will be determined to get into the top 10 tomorrow.
“Well done to the entire Rizla Suzuki team for all of their hard work. Well done also to Michael Laverty who qualified in second and that makes it a one-two on the grid for Suzuki.”

Fantastic fourths for Sykes
RIZLA SUZUKI’S Tom Sykes took two hard-earned fourth place finishes at the sixth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Mallory Park in Leicestershire today.
Starting from pole position in the opening dry race, Sykes made a steady start, falling back to fifth on the opening lap before battling back up the field. He was always in contention for the victory and set the fastest lap of the race at the 1.41-mile Mallory Park circuit on his way to fourth place.
In the second race with the track soaking wet but the sun shining, Tom opted for an intermediate front tyre and slick rear. He got the hole-shot but dropped back to ninth before the track dried enough to take advantage of his grippy Pirelli. He scythed through the field as the sun shone and was fourth again.
Rizla Suzuki’s Atsushi Watanabe showed real aggression and speed to take ninth in the opening race but found the treacherous conditions in race two difficult, ending up 20th. Ducati’s Shane Byrne won the first race and Michael Rutter the second.
There is now a three-week break for the Rizla Suzuki squad with round seven of the British Superbike Championship taking place at the picturesque Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire on the 20th July.
Tom:
“Race one was very frustrating. Rather than getting my trademark good start, my clutch grabbed and I found myself sixth going into the first corner. I fought my way up but the guys in front were quick and difficult to overtake. It’s a shame as I had the pace and if I’d got off the line better I may have pulled away with a clear track in front.
“The second race was a real lottery and the tyre choice we made was a good balance. As the track dried I got faster and fourth was the best I could do. It was a hard race and I am happy to have brought my Rizla Suzuki home given how slippery the track was during the first few laps. I’ll just have to wait to the next round at Oulton Park before I get my maiden win...”
Atsu:
“Race one was not so bad and I have good start and fighting for top 10 positions. This makes me happy and I hope for same for race two but the rain falls and tyres choice tough and many quick riders make very difficult for good result.
“The racing today has been up and down and I am still learning. I will think on this and come back stronger and for more top 10 places at the next round.”
Jack Valentine, Rizla Suzuki Team Manager:
“I was a bit disappointed for Tom in the opening race because he had the pace to win but got a very uncharacteristic poor start. He was the only rider to go under 56secs a lap and that shows just how close we were to winning.
“The second race was a real gamble on tyres and Tom’s crew made a sensible choice. It was exciting to watch and he thoroughly deserved another fourth place finish and the points in the bag for the Championship.
“Atsu put on a brave battling performance in the opening race but the conditions hit him hard in the second. He has the talent, team and bike to compete at the front and we’ll be doing all we can to get him up where he belongs during the second half of the season.”
