Sykes and Watanabe determined ahead of Brands Hatch
RIZLA SUZUKI’S Tom Sykes and Atsushi Watanabe are determined to secure strong results this coming weekend at the rescheduled first round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at the Brands Hatch GP circuit in Kent.
The first round of the Championship progressed as far as qualifying, with Sykes taking fifth place and Watanabe scoring a superb ninth on his first visit to the demanding 2.3 mile track. Unfortunately the meeting didn’t continue as race day had to be abandoned due to heavy snow. The qualifying positions will stand and the two day meeting will consist of free practice on Saturday 10th May with race day on Sunday 11th May.
Sykes is hungry for a podium finish which has eluded him so far this season. He has shown that his Rizla Suzuki has the pace to win and believes it is now just a matter of time. Watanabe comes to Brands Hatch for the second time with the benefit of knowing the track and his top 10 qualifying has put him in a strong position for the race.
Race one will commence on Sunday 11th May at 1315 with race two at 1620; Eurosport 2 will broadcast live from 1300-1430 and from 1515-1700.
Jack Valentine Rizla Suzuki Team Manager:
“I’m looking forward to this weekend at Brands Hatch as we have already been there and have good settings for our Rizla Suzukis. We also have the benefit of two more race meetings under our belts allowing us to make the GSX-R1000s even more competitive - as we proved at Oulton Park.
“It will be an interesting meeting for Atsu as he has already been to Brands Hatch and will be under more pressure for a good result. He had a superb qualifying session last time and I think he can push hard for a top eight finish. As for Tom, we all know what he is capable of as we saw that at Oulton Park. I feel we are on for a successful weekend.” |

Fine tuning benefits Rizla Suzuki at Brands Hatch
TOM SYKES and Atsushi Watanabe used today’s additional free practice time, at the rescheduled Brands Hatch GP round, to work on fine tuning their Rizla Suzukis giving them a competitive set-up ahead of tomorrow’s Bennetts British Superbike Championship double header.
Soaring temperatures at the 2.3 mile Kent circuit allowed Rizla Suzuki’s racers to make the most of the two 30-minute free practice sessions. Sykes finished in fifth place, steadily working through changes on both his Rizla Suzuki race bikes. Watanabe came home in 18th on his return to the challenging track.
Round one, at the Brands Hatch GP circuit, which was originally scheduled for Sunday 6th April will take place tomorrow on Sunday 11th May. The grid was set from the positions achieved at that event, however both Rizla Suzuki riders have moved up one position on the grid due to the injured Karl Harris withdrawing from the event, so Sykes will start from fourth place and Watanabe will line up in eighth.
Race one will commence on Sunday 11th May at 1315 with race two at 1620; Eurosport 2 will broadcast live from 1300-1430 and from 1515-1700.
Tom: “We worked on different settings on both my Rizla Suzukis during free practice one, and then married the best bits from each bike into one for the second session. Overall I’m pleased with the out-come. My Rizla Suzuki technicians have some changes to make before warm-up tomorrow which will improve my race set-up even further. Brands Hatch is a tough circuit and these changes will allow me to push the front end as hard as I need to here.”
Atsu: “I know Brands Hatch now, I need to fine tune my Rizla Suzuki and fine tune Atsu. The high temperatures have made it more difficult to find grip, but my Rizla Suzuki technicians have some changes for warm-up tomorrow. I’m looking forward to racing here at last - it will be a big challenge.”
Jack Valentine Rizla Suzuki Team Manager: “We’ve had two productive sessions on track today. We have already visited Brands Hatch this year, so we have our settings from that event. We also found a good set-up at Oulton Park; we’ve put these together for Tom and with these race settings I feel very positive for tomorrow. We have a few very small changes to make tonight which we will run in morning warm-up.
“Atsu also worked on both his machines today. At the moment he needs a little more work on set-up, however his Rizla Suzuki technicians have a direction to go in so we will see an improvement in warm-up.”

Superb second place for Sykes and Rizla Suzuki
TOM SYKES scored a well deserved podium second place today for Rizla Suzuki during the Brands Hatch GP round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship.
In the opening race, starting from fourth place on the front row of the grid at the 2.3-mile long Kent circuit, Tom battled with Ducati’s Shane Byrne, eventually finishing a close runner-up. He was in second position again in race two with only a handful of laps to go, when he crashed out unscathed due to a mechanical issue. The race was won by Cal Crutchlow.
Rizla Suzuki’s Atsushi Watanabe took a determined 12th place finish in race one at the Kent track, as the two times Japanese Champion continues to find his feet in the highly competitive British Superbike Championship. His second race ended early when he was forced to retire.
The fourth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship will take place at Donington Park on Monday, 26th May.
Tom: “The podium in race one has been a long time coming. My Rizla Suzuki technicians worked really hard and I’m pleased I was able to repay them with some champagne. As for race two, it was just unfortunate as I had the pace to win but crashed out due to a mechanical failure. I don’t want to dwell on the incident as we have had a lot of positives this weekend. I just want to get on my Rizla Suzuki at Donington Park and finish both races on the podium. I know we are capable of that.”
Atsu: “It has been a difficult weekend. I want a better result than 12th place but I am improving all the time and my team is working well. Our next race is at Donington Park which I visited with John Reynolds so I know where the track goes - now all I need to do is be fast.”
Jack Valentine, Team Manager Rizla Suzuki: “I’m thrilled with the podium finish which Tom secured in race one. That is where we want to be, where we feel we should be and in Tom’s case, what he deserves. He rode a very mature race and I know there is more to come from him. As for race two, Tom crashed out at high speed due to a mechanical problem, thankfully he walked away unhurt – he’ll be back stronger than ever and fighting for podiums.
“Atsu also had a tough weekend but overall he put in a good effort at a challenging circuit. He has already visited Donington Park on a track day and it is more like the circuits he is used to in Japan, so we are hoping for a top 10 result.”
