Sykes rolls to fourth place for Rizla Suzuki
RIZLA SUZUKI’S Tom Sykes finished in fourth place today at Oulton Park during free practice for round three of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship, lapping the challenging Cheshire track in 1min 37.344secs.
Sykes and his crew worked steadily through a number of chassis changes to dial his Rizla Suzuki into the undulating 2.69 mile circuit and set his fastest lap right at the end of the session.
Atsushi Watanabe rode to 16th place during the dry 50-minute sessions putting his new found circuit knowledge to use, having completed a track day with John Reynolds at Oulton Park ahead of the race weekend. He gradually improved his lap times and moved up the ranks to achieve a top 16 placing.
The fastest rider during the session was Honda’s Cal Crutchlow. Qualifying takes place tomorrow 4th May at 1505 – 1555, the racing starts in anger on Bank Holiday Monday 5th May with race one at 1300 and race two at 1530. British Eurosport will broadcast live on race day at 1230-1630.
Tom Sykes:
“We are getting there, I could have got a better run on my fast lap but I made a little mistake, otherwise I would have been lapping in the 1min 36s which is where we need to be. We are definitely going in the right direction and I love this circuit. We are working on the chassis and have plenty more changes to try; I know what direction I want to go in. I hope we get more dry track time but if we don’t then it is the same for everyone and we can gamble on the settings.”
Atsushi Watanabe:
“Still learning the track but my feeling for here is better than my feeling for Thruxton. Some corners are very challenging and some very technical but there are lots of places to overtake. The bumps on the circuit are difficult but it is good circuit.”
Free Practice Results:
1: Cal Crutchlow (Honda) 1:36.596
2: Leon Haslam (Honda) +0.151
3: Shane Byrne (Ducati) +0.448

Sykes secures front row start for Rizla Suzuki
TOM SYKES has put his Rizla Suzuki firmly on the front row of the grid in third place for round three of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park in Cheshire.
The single 50-minute qualifying session was held in difficult conditions as the track was drying out following heavy rain which had fallen until just prior to the session.
Sykes’s team spent the weekend honing the chassis settings on his Rizla Suzuki which paid dividends during qualifying. His team opted to run the same tyre which he intends to use on race day, this allowed Sykes to build up to his fast lap in the tricky conditions. Just as the chequered flag came out Sykes posted his fastest time sealing third place.
His team-mate Atsushi Watanabe started the session on his number one machine running wet settings. As the track was drying rapidly he came in to change to dry settings which cost him some time. Once back out on track his number one machine stopped leaving him to make his way back to pick up his second bike which he ran for the remainder of the session, working hard to achieve 17th place.
Both riders are confident for race day and have spent time on the undulating 2.69 mile track in both wet and dry conditions so they are well prepared for either.
Racing takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 5th May with race one at 1300 and race two at 1530. British Eurosport will broadcast live on race day at 1230-1630.
Tom Sykes:
“I started the session on intermediate tyres but when I got on track I realised it was pretty dry. I came in changed to slicks and got back out there. I stayed on the same race tyre and posted my fastest lap on lap 20, so to pull off third place on the front row of the grid is not too shabby. I’m happy with my front row start, I just want to get away well and see what happens. I’m not bothered either way if it is wet or dry, I was second fastest this morning in the wet and third in qualifying in the dry. My Rizla Suzuki technicians have worked really hard to give me ideal setting on my Rizla Suzuki so a big thinks to them.”
Atsushi Watanabe:
“The conditions were difficult today as the track was drying out. It is still new track for me so I am learning every lap. I’m not happy with 17th but I like track and will do better in the race.”
Jack Valentine Team Manager:
“I’m very pleased with today as the team did a superb job. They found a good race set-up to claim third place on a tyre that has done over race distance. I’m really looking forward to the race, we need a good start and then we should be battling for a win. Atsushi had a difficult time due to the conditions however he is only just outside the top 16 and I’m confident he will pull of an improved result.”
Qualifying Results:
1: Cal Crutchlow (Honda) 1:36.605
2: Shane Byrne (Ducati) +0.583
3: TOM SYKES (RIZLA SUZUKI) +0.639
4: Leon Haslam (Ducati) +0.785
5: Michael Rutter (Ducati) +0.905
6: Karl Harris (Yamaha) +1.303
7: Leon Camier (Ducati) +1.484
8: Michael Laverty (Suzuki) +1.960
9: James Ellison (Honda) +2.048
10: Simon Andrews (Yamaha) +2.107
17: ATSUSHI WATANABE (RIZLA SUZUKI) +3.139 |

Was a sad day for Tom.
I'm sure he would have let the last race go, but this time Leon was a muppet
Ducatis have won it already and the smug interview with the manager just put the icing on the cake .............WONKER |

Leon Haslam, some kind of dickhead or what. Thruxton might have been one of those things but to be honest, he was riding like a dickhead with Karl Harris before he tangled with Sykesy and took Harris out as well.
Whether it was a racing incident or not, that was building for a couple of laps before. This time, no excuses, that was just crap and dangerous riding.
Even Ron's face showed that when they showed him in the pit.
So, in total agreement with Ash...what a Wonker |

Sykes shows race winning pace
RIZLA SUZUKI'S Tom Sykes led both of today’s third round races at the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park and declared his intentions for the rest of the season.
In race one Sykes led in wet but drying conditions before eventually finishing in fifth place; and in the second dry race he led for the first 10 laps before clashing with another rider and crashing unhurt.
Rizla Suzuki’s Atsushi Watanabe scored his first top 10 finish of his British Superbike campaign in the second race. In the opener he claimed points finishing in a competitive 13th position. Ducati’s Shane Byrne won both races at the 2.69 mile Cheshire track.
Rizla Suzuki is back in action at the Brands Hatch GP circuit in Kent this Sunday, May 11th. This race was originally the opening round but postponed due to heavy snow. It is a shortened two day meeting with practice on Saturday and racing on Sunday.
Tom: “I’m incredibility frustrated; I thought I could have won my first Superbike race today for Rizla Suzuki. I was leading comfortably whilst watching my pit signals and the race was under control when another rider clashed with me and I crashed.
“I will be focusing on the positives from this meeting and can’t wait to get my Rizla Suzuki back on track at Brands Hatch later this week. We proved we have the bike, rider and team to challenge for race wins and that is my intention for the rest of the season.”
Atsu: “My feeling with my Rizla Suzuki is improving with every lap I complete. Finishing ninth is ok but I want better.
“We return to Oulton Park later in the year and this I am looking forward to. I now know base setting and how to go fast here – watch out for Atsu.”
Jack Valentine Rizla Suzuki Team Manager: “Tom was very unfortunate not to win his first Superbike race today. We are all looking forward to the remaining races as it is very clear that the Rizla Suzuki GSX-R1000 is capable of winning and Tom Sykes without a doubt is ready for a victory. It will come soon.
“Atsu in only his second race meeting has got into the top 10 at possibly one of the hardest tracks to master. His talent is beyond doubt and we are all eager to see what he can achieve at Brands Hatch, a circuit he has already ridden on his Rizla Suzuki.
“I am proud of the effort, determination and professionalism shown by the entire Rizla Suzuki team. Hard work and effort will bring its just rewards and this team is capable of winning – roll on the next round.”
Race one results:
1: Shane Byrne (Ducati) 32:29.161
2: Leon Haslam (Honda) +0.204
3: Leon Camier (Ducati) +2.604
